This magnificent home in Harrogate is for sale with a new price set to tempt buyers who love something different

It is one of the most magnificent homes in Harrogate and certainly the most unusual thanks to its architecture and the flair and creative energy of its owner Mark Hinchliffe.

Now, after sitting on the market waiting for the right buyer, The Chapel House in Harrogate looks set to tempt an offer after a significant price drop and some fresh suggestions for future use.

At the moment, the Grade II listed former Methodist chapel on Grove Road, is Mark’s home, which he runs as a hugely successful and lucrative boutique BnB, events venue and a place for film and photography shoots.

It took him four years and every bit of energy he had to convert the magnificent building for residential use.

Business sales agency Nationwide Business Sales, which is marketing the property, say it could remain as a home and/or a B&B but could, given planning consent, be easily turned into three apartments.

The chapel’s conversion was a true labour of love and the property is packed with original architectural and newly hand-crafted features, along with Mark’s ever increasing collection of art, antiques and quirky finds.

The latter includes columns from an Indian palace, religious statues, a Cromwellian foot stirrup, a bearskin hat, a square piano and a tabletop from an Italian monastery.

The kitchen is a triumph thanks to Howarth-based furniture designer and maker Anthony Hartley who upcycled old pews into kitchen cabinets. Mark’s guests have included everyone from celebrities and landed gentry to visitors from across the world who have adored the chapel’s interiors and remarkably tranquil feel.

“I’ve really enjoyed living here and I’ve loved running The Chapel House as a B&B. We’ve had guests from all over the globe and, as a result, I’ve met some really interesting people,” says Mark.

The property has also starred on TV a number of times, most notably in Channel 4’s Restoration Man and in Four in a Bed, where it scored highly.

The sale at a cut-price has been sparked by Mark’s wanderlust. He would like to move abroad and tackle another property project either in Italy or in Marrakesh.

However, when the property sells, he will be sad to leave and says: “It’s time to move on but I will miss this place and my neighbours as there is a great community spirit in this part of Harrogate.”

Though a self-confessed hoarder of art, antiques and vintage finds, he would be prepared to sell some of the contents to the buyer.

The Chapel House is on the market for offers over £1m with Nationwide Business Sales.

The magnificent building has 600 sq. metres of space, including a kitchen, vaulted living area with a 15m high ceiling, four reception rooms, six ensuite bedrooms and potential to add another bedroom in the library.

Outside, there is a south-facing courtyard garden.

Offers for the property close no later than Tuesday, May 2, and the house is expected to achieve circa £1.25m. For details contact Simon Burbridge, tel: 07464 477823, www.nbscorporate.com
