Latest books for prisoners as library are closed

From: Karl Sheridan, Selby Road, Holme on Spalding Moor.

THE recent revelation that the Government proposes to squander additional money to equip prisons with the latest books – while closing libraries for the rest of us – proves that someone in charge of the coalition really needs a reality check as well as an injection of common sense.

I was brought up to understand that if you did wrong there were consequences, and also with the understanding that as a member of society that I had responsibilities, and that my actions were down to me – I had the choice.

However, it now appears that if you commit crime against others, the criminal ends up living a cossetted life with all amenities supplied – something many law-abiding citizens on the outside would envy.

A further example of inept management is the Census – costing billions to process when, in fact, an on-line version would have been far cheaper, and just as effective.

What frightens me is that the Government doesn’t seem to understand what money is for. Ministers write off billions on ventures like high-speed rail like dealing with Monopoly money.

But never mind, it appears the coalition are firmly on the side of criminals giving them a nice comfy life inside with the best we can supply: shorter sentences – if any at all – and even helping them on the outside by reducing police numbers.

Is it me, or has this country completely lost the plot?
