Skipton canal boat hire sells out for August as families flock to self-drive adventures
Visitors are flocking to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal this summer, with self-drive boat trips in Skipton selling out for the whole of August.
Adventurous day-trippers have embraced their inner captain along the Leeds Liverpool Canal.
Skipton Boat Trips has offered self-drive boats since 2009, but demand has been so high this year that August is already sold out.
James Watson, owner of Skipton Boat Trips, said: “August is naturally one of our busiest periods, particularly when the weather is good and families are looking for something different to do during the school holidays.”
“The fact that all of our August availability has already sold out shows just how strong demand has been this summer,” he added.

With around 17 miles of lock-free water to explore, the route is beginner-friendly.
“We explain the sensible turning points and how far they can travel within their 6.5-hour hire, but the idea is not to race as far as possible,” James explained.
“Most people take their time, stop for a picnic or at the White Rose pub in nearby Kildwick, and enjoy the scenery,” he said.
The boats are fitted with cooking facilities, comfortable seating, and toilets.
It is possible to pre-order Afternoon Tea Boxes for £12.50 per person.
Each hire begins with a short briefing, ensuring guests are comfortable taking control of the boat.
“Steering can feel slightly counter-intuitive at first because the tiller moves in the opposite direction to the way you want the front of the boat to go, but most customers settle into it very quickly,” James explained.
Self-driving along the Leeds Liverpool Canal is a memorable way to experience the Yorkshire countryside.
The experience attracts all types of visitors, including couples, friends, and families.
Each boat has capacity for up to 10 people, and many guests bring a dog.
“We do get some brilliant themed groups and outfits,” added James. “Lots of Captain Jack Sparrows.”
