This year the gardening halls at the event at the Great Yorkshire Showground, in Harrogate, which continues tomorrow and Sunday, are filled with over 5,000 beautiful blooms and displays by nearly a hundred plant nurseries.

There is also a nod to current affairs with Richmond florist Lucy Hutton Smith depicting the Scottish referendum debate in her giant flag tribute which uses over 3,000 fruit and vegetables to create a split flag, which is half Union Jack and half Scottish flag, just days before the referendum on Scottish independence.

“It represents the discussion at the moment, people have not made their mind up, so its very divided,” she said of her design.

She added: “Nobody knows if it will go one way or another.”

Miss Hutton Smith said she hopes that Scottish voters reject independence saying: “We should remain as one unified country but I am not Scottish so its not up to me.”

This year the show celebrates all things apple with cookery demonstrations and a pop-up orchard. New for 2014 is Inspiration Street, which gives visitors ideas for small-scale front gardens.

Designs range from a vegetable plot, complete with salad-filled paving cracks, to a modern take on the ancient art of making mosaics, all set against the backdrop of a traditional terrace.
