Meet the Yorkshire company that’s changing the face of performance clothing.

Slaithwaite-based McNair Shirts is harnessing generations of knowledge from Huddersfield’s wool industry to produce a unique handmade range that’s catching the attention of a host of celebrity fans.

Their unique merino cloth took over a year to develop but, being based in the wool heartlands of Yorkshire, McNair were able to work closely with local spinners, dyers, weavers and finishers who shared their hundreds of years of manufacturing expertise to help create a world-class performance fabric.

You can see for yourself at the Great Yorkshire Show until 12 July, or check out the full range at https://mcnairshirts.com/

Made properly in Yorkshire

Branded as “natural fabrics with unnatural performance”, the founders of McNair set out with a mission to make the best mountain shirt in the world.

The company turns natural cloth into technical outdoor clothing that retains its look and feel whilst at the same time achieving impressive levels of performance.

All their shirts, jackets and gilets are handmade in Yorkshire from beautiful, natural materials; the spinning, dyeing and finishing is all done within 10 miles of their mill in “Slawit” where they create their shirts.

In addition to their famous merino wool shirts, there are also buttery soft moleskins, beautiful corduroys, sturdy canvases and even tropical weight half Panamas. Ranges include men's, women's, off-the-peg and made-to-measure.

McNair Shirts sell all over the world via their website, and their list of high-profile customers include explorers like Simon Reeves and the BBC’s international news editor Jeremy Bowen, along with Countryfile’s Adam Henson and Our Yorkshire Farm's Amanda Owen.

They have also gained the seal of approval from British Olympic speaker and snowboarding champion Jenny Jones and Ski Sunday’s Ed Leigh.

Clothing that works with nature

Their ethos “of nature, not against” has remained unchanged for the last decade, underpinning their pledge to only use natural materials and enhance their weather resistance for the great outdoors – without the compromise of plastic or harmful fluorocarbons.

The result is clothing that will take you from dawn to dusk in the city, countryside, coast and the mountains year-round. McNair Shirts are temperature-regulating, naturally breathable, weather-resistant, warm, soft and understatedly stylish.

And the team are rightfully proud of their traditional and principled approach to manufacturing in Britain with one simple aim: to make the best performance clothing in the world without compromising the earth.
