Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2024: Dog-friendly micropubs on East Coast and near Yorkshire Dales scoop joint title
The Three B's Micropub a few minutes walk from the seafront at Bridlington has been placed joint first with the The Beer Engine, on Albert Terrace in Skipton, for the title of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Yorkshire Pub of the Year.
The Three B’s boasts three to four craft real ales, 11 ciders and a range of gins – as well as pie and peas “all day everyday”.
It has had five star reviews on Tripadvisor with customers praising its friendly landlord Mark Bates, who opened the ex sweet shop on Marshall Avenue in lockdown four years ago.
One recent review read: “He took the time to come and have a chat with us, despite being busy on a warm sunny day! The beer was good and his passion for micro pubs is evident.”
Mr Bates said he was “over the moon” with the accolade, saying it was “definitely all about the beer”.
He said: “Ninety per cent of our beer comes from Yorkshire as does 50 per cent of the cider. We never have the same beer twice.
"We have one that doesn’t change which is Acorn Barnsley Bitter – apart from that they never repeat. We have had 860 beers so far.”
The Beer Engine, described by CAMRA as “a well-established micropub in a tiny street between the town centre and the canal” is equally popular and five-star rated. One review described it as “a jewel in Skipton's crown”.
The pubs – which are both dog-friendly - fought off competition from 15 other shortlisted bars.
Each establishment was visited by CAMRA members and judged on its quality and choice of real ale, style and decor, service and value for money.
The Beer Engine has won the award for a second year in a row, having also placed first in 2023.
Skipton MP Sir Julian Smith said “The Beer Engine is an excellent pub. It is great to see them continuing to get the recognition they deserve.
"If you’re in the area, I would strongly recommend that you drop by to see it for yourself. I look forward to visiting again soon.”
Meanwhile the Wortley Men’s Club in Wortley has been named “Yorkshire Club of the Year 2024” and is now celebrating winning eight times in the past eleven years, after also taking the prestigious title from 2014 to 2019, and 2023.
The club at the back of the Wortley Arms pub, near Wortley Hall and gardens, is run by club stewardess, Teresa Pickering. and has timber frames, wooden panelling and a real fire.
CAMRA’s Yorkshire Regional Director, Kevin Keaveny, said “This eighth win shows the club’s continued commitment to high standards.
"It also shows that a club in a village can thrive if the management offer the members the products, facilities, and level of service that they require.”
