“A truly fantastic achievement”: One million copies of new game from Yorkshire publisher sold in first day

A new video game published by Yorkshire firm Team17 has sold over a million copies on its first day of release.

Developed by Derby-based Bulkhead, Wardogs was released on Thursday, reaching over 340,000 concurrent players on gaming platform Steam on the same day.

Team17 is part of Yorkshire-based Everplay, which also holds a strategic partnership with Bulkhead.

Mikkel Weider, group chief executive officer of everplay, said: "Selling more than one million copies on day one is a truly fantastic achievement by Bulkhead and Team17.

“I would like to thank everyone for their tremendous work. I'm really excited about our partnership with Bulkhead and proud to be part of the Wardogs franchise."

Everyplay and Bulkhead launched their partnership in January of last year.

It came after Everyplay acquired a 20 per cent minority stake in Super Media Group – Bulkhead’s parent company – for £2m.

In a July trading update, Everplay said it expected its full-year results to land in-line with current analyst expectations, which predict revenues of £175.3m and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of £50.7m. The company is set to announce its results later this month.

This year has also seen Everplay involved in a number of major titles including Hell Let Loose: Vietnam and Golf With Your Friends 2 (GWYF 2).

In a statement issued earlier this week, ahead of the Wardogs launch, Sean Kealy, a research analyst at Panmure Liberum, said: “Everplay has had a difficult year to date. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam has likely underperformed its potential, and GWYF 2 has been moved to 2027. Gaming stocks’ fortunes can turn on a dime, however, and with the exceptional pre-launch ramp of Wardogs (launching tomorrow) through August, we now have increased confidence in forecasts. This takes the pressure off, and puts upside potential back on the table – although we caution that Everplay still has a lot to deliver in H2.”
