Affordable homes will fill former care home site

A new complex of flats and maisonettes – all to meet the need for affordable housing – have been given the go-ahead by councillors in Rotherham.

The decision will bring a vacant plot of land back into use and provide apartments and maisonettes with one and two bedrooms on the site of the former Rothwell Grange care home in Broom Valley Road, Rotherham, which closed several years ago.

The building was demolished more recently and the land had already been allocated for housing, because care homes elsewhere took up the need for the places Rothwell Grange had provided.

Councillors on the authority’s planning board voted unanimously to approve the scheme, which will see buildings of up to three storeys go up on the site, with a parking space for each of the new homes.

The location is regarded as being within walking distance of local amenities and accessible for public transport users, with part of the agreement being that more than £20,000 will be paid towards improving sustainable transport.

Because there will be no open green space on the site, a further contribution of £17,000 will be made to improving public space nearby, including the installation of play equipment for children.
