Alan McCartney, civil engineer
Alan McCartney, who has died at 83, helped run a civil engineering company that was responsible for building up the bridge on the River Kwai for the 1957 movie, and for constructing a new stand at Twickenham for the 1992 Rugby Union World Cup.
Born in Stoke on Trent, he had lived in Sheffield for 54 years, and as a partner at Husbands and later a director of Mott MacDonald, was involved in such well-known constructions as the radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, the rebuilt Britannia Bridge over the Menai Straits, and parts of Sheffield’s Hillsborough Stadium.
A resident of Dore, he was a committed Rotarian, keen golfer and a lover of steam trains.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary, sons David and Andrew, and four grandchildren.
