Apprenticeship figures call rejected

The chairman of a committee of MPs has expressed “deep disappointment” that the Government did not believe it was necessary for schools to publish how many students gain apprenticeships.

The Business, Innovation and Skills Committee, as part of an inquiry into apprenticeships, suggested that, alongside university places gained, schools should publish the number of apprenticeships started. In its response, the Government said it had no plans to require schools to publish the information.

Committee chairman Adrian Bailey (Labour, West Bromwich West) said apprenticeships were an attractive path to a successful career and should be reflected in the culture of schools. He was “deeply disappointed” at the Government reaction and called on it to reconsider.

He added: “The Government has also failed to take up our recommendation that a formal structure be set up to attach apprenticeships to public procurement contracts. We fail to believe that a structure cannot be found that retains flexibility whilst also encouraging apprenticeships.”
