Barnsley FC extend contract of captain Alex Mowatt by another 12 months

BARNSLEY have activated the option to extend captain Alex Mowatt's contract for a further 12 months until the summer of 2021.

Mowatt, a hugely influential figure at Oakwell, was an ever-present during the club's promotion to the Championship last season and has been outstanding through the current campaign until it's curtailment in March.

On the news, Reds chief executive officer Dane Murphy said: “Alex Mowatt is a key member of Gerhard’s squad.

The club have been clear in its intent to keep Alex at Oakwell longer than his current deal permits. Retaining his services for at least another season is significant.

“Despite the club’s position and the uncertainties that cloud the future of the 2019/20 season, we remain positive and competitive on all fronts.

Having Alex lead our team is key to this mentality."

Murphy has confirmed that Barnsley are following all the guidelines and protocols in expectation of a potential return to training for the club's players on May 25.
