Battle site dig unearths royal chapel

A TEAM of archaeologists has raised hopes that the site of a chapel built near York by Richard III to mark the House of York’s victory in the bloody Battle of Towton has been found.

While filming TV series Medieval Dead, due to air on UKTV’s Yesterday channel on October 21, they uncovered remains that could be the lost chapel.

Lead archaeologist Tim Sutherland, from York University, said worked stone, as well as lead and glass from the windows had been found but a larger excavation would have to confirm the location.

Richard had strong links with York, prompting pressure for his recently-discovered remains to be returned to the city.
