Bing Crosby remake may be Christmas No 1

Crooner Bing Crosby is going to challenge the X Factor for the Christmas number one spot, as he bids for his first ever chart-topper.

Despite selling millions, the late singing star, who died 33 years ago, has never scored a number one single.

But studio wizardry means he is to duet with opera star Bryn Terfel on a new version of his timeless classic White Christmas. The track's original release in 1942 predated the UK singles chart by a decade.

Bookmaker William Hill is now giving the track odds of 6-1 to become the Christmas number one – better than the price for an actual white Christmas, which is 8-1. Last year saw a concerted effort to keep the X Factor winner from the number one spot, with a huge chart battle which resulted in Rage Against The Machine depriving Joe McElderry of the prime spot.

White Christmas is judged to be the biggest selling single of all time with sales of more than 50 million.
