Blaze-hit Victorian castle’s £8m resoration completed

WORK on an £8m project to restore a fire ravaged historic Yorkshire country house to its former glory has been completed

A blaze in 2005 ripped through wedding and events venue Allerton Castle at Allerton Mauleverer near Harrogate.

The dining room, state rooms, Venetian suite and all of the servants’ wing were destroyed.

Also extensively damaged in the fire were the library and conservatory in the Grade I listed 19th century building.

It is suspected that flames from a chimney fire got in to the roof voids on the north side of the Victorian Gothic castle before spreading.

The Great Hall’s 70ft high glass-panelled roof was revealed last year.

The castle’s luxurious dining room – which was almost fully destroyed by the devastating fire – was the final part of the restoration project to be completed.

The completion of the restoration was revealed at an official event at the castle last week.

Trustees of the Rolph Foundation, which maintains the private residence, hosted an evening of celebrations with Dine – the castle’s wedding and event managers.

Daniel Gill, managing director of Dine, said: “The restoration of the castle has been a huge project for the Rolph Foundation but it is amazing to see it back to its former splendour.

Mr Gill added: “Allerton Castle is an extremely popular wedding and events venue given its idyllic location and the completion of the spacious dining room is a momentous occasion.”

Allerton Castle is also open to the public for guided tours.
