Brewery loses sleep over Red Bull name threat

A brewery set up by a group of friends has been threatened with legal action by energy drink manufacturer Red Bull over its name.

Norwich’s Redwell Brewing, which employs eight people, has been told customers could confuse the brands because both names begin with “Red” and end “ll”.

Redwell was sent a letter by Red Bull saying it would face legal action if a resolution was not found by the end of the month.

The letter was sent a month after the first Redwell beers hit the market in April. It said: “The terms Red Bull and Redwell are confusingly similar from a visual as well from a phonetical point of view. The consumer will thus be confused as to the origin of the services.”

The brewery, named after the city’s Redwell Street, is run by four pals. One of them, Patrick Fisher said: “The letter came as a huge shock. It didn’t in a million years occur to us that we were treading on their toes.”

Red Bull said it would not comment on a pending case.
