He was taken to the San Espases hospital in nearby Palma but died three hours later in intensive care.

Mr Atkinson had celebrated his 20th birthday only last Wednesday.

In a separate tragedy a plane made an emergency diversion and landed after a passenger died. The incident happened on a flight from Leeds Bradford Airport to Prague last Friday, Jet2 said.

The passenger, believed to be a 22-year-old man, suffered serious breathing difficulties as the plane was travelling north of Dusseldorf in Germany. The man’s name and nationality has not been released.
