Celebrating county’s women who inspire

As International Women’s Day approaches, the Yorkshire Post is asking readers to tell us about the women who inspire them.

We want to know who among the county’s legions of remarkable women deserve to be recognised in the pages of this newspaper and on our website, www.yorkshirepost.co.uk.

This year’s International Women’s Day falls on Saturday, March 8. To mark the occasion, we will publish the thoughts of contributors.

Head of news Mark Casci said: “There is no shortage of candidates to choose from when nominating inspirational women from Yorkshire.

“The worlds of politics, sport, arts, and culture are populated with great ambassadors for the White Rose County.”

First observed in the United States in the early 20th century, International Women’s Day was originally known as International Working Women’s Day.

In August 1910, an International Women’s Conference was organised to precede the general meeting of the Socialist Second International in Copenhagen.

Proposals for an annual International Woman’s Day were agreed, with the aim of promoting equal rights, including suffrage.

Today many countries recognise March 8 as a national holiday, with men traditionally honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends and colleagues with flowers and small gifts.
