The Yorkshire Post has teamed up with the Yorkshire Community Foundations for the appeal. The Foundation is a network of local charities and will ensure every penny donated is spent directly helping those in need.

Despite the affluent cities in the region more than a third of pensioners can barely afford to heat their homes while even in our magnificent countryside around a quarter of children are living in hidden poverty.

One of the lots up for auction this week is a family ticket to Christmas Adventure at Stockfeld Park, which offers an enchanted forest, a Nordic ski route and a maze.

Katie Bennett, from Stockfeld Park, said: "The forest is beautiful at night because it all gets lit up and interactive statues of mythical creatures line the route."
