Cigarettes and wine smuggling plots foiled

BORDER Force officers discovered nearly 17,000 litres of wine and more than 87,000 cigarettes in two separate seizures at ports in Hull and Immingham.

The wine was found in a container from the Netherlands at Immingham on September 11, four days before the cigarettes were found hidden inside a specially adapted fuel tank on a lorry in Hull.

A further 10,000 cigarettes were seized from a passenger at Leeds-Bradford Airport on September 17.

The force said the smugglers would have cost the Treasury £80,000 in unpaid excise duty.
