City Hall makes killing with soap murder trial

ITS courtroom saw its fair share of drama but Bradford's City Hall is set to bear witness to a trial that will keep millions of Coronation Street viewers on the edge of their seats.

Cast and crew will travel to Yorkshire to film the soap's Gail Macintyre, played by actress Helen Worth, taking the stand in the landmark's historic Victorian court to be charged with murdering her screen husband Joe in the Lake District.

The courtroom last dispensed justice in the mid 1970s but has since been used for filming including doubling up for Manchester Crown Court for Tracy Barlow's trial in the soap in 2007.

It has also been used for other television dramas including Brides in the Bath featuring ex-EastEnders actor Martin Kemp.

Coronation Street's location manager, Ken Mair, opted to return after being shown around by City Hall premises manager James Brumfitt.

When Tracy's trial was shot at City Hall three years ago the directors also filmed scenes in the council's banqueting hall and the Saville room. The Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor John Godward, said: "It will be great to see Coronation Street back in Bradford again. City Hall provides a spectacular and historic backdrop for all types of dramas. This is another great coup for Bradford – it continues the rich filming heritage we are all so proud of."

Bradford City Hall has also featured in films such as the 1959 classic Room at the Top, written by Bingley author John Braine, and the more recent Blow Dry penned by Full Monty screenplay writer Simon Beaufoy, from Keighley.
