Compensation call over £30 ID cards

Labour demanded that the taxpayer foot the bill to compensate about 11,000 people who paid £30 for a national ID card.

Shadow Home Office minister Meg Hillier said it was a matter of “justice” that those who purchased the cards in “good faith” should now get their money back.

But she faced derision from Tory MPs and the SNP, who said it was clear many parties in the Commons had opposed the 5bn ID scheme and promised to scrap them when in power.
