Compensation claims over sewage issues

YORKSHIRE Water has told customers it will consider compensation claims after problems with a pumping station “upgrade” led to several burst sewer pipes in south Leeds.

Complaints were made to the company at the end of last year after burst pipes caused roadworks in the Haigh Park Road area of Stourton and sparked a three-week stint where sewage tankers left waste on their doorstep.

Sharon Johnson, 44, who runs an Army surplus store, said: “The health issues are just ridiculous. When retail businesses are suffering anyway we are losing business through no fault of our own.”

Workers spent Tuesday installing new equipment to lessen the pressure on the sewer system and prevent further bursts and end the problems.

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: “We’d like to apologise to local residents and businesses regarding the issues we’ve had of late with our pumping station.”

The spokesman added the firm will review compensation claims.
