Council doubles its local spending

Wakefield council has doubled the amount it spends in the district over the last eight years, it has claimed.

The local authority said its procurement strategy now meant that it spent some £68million with local businesses.

It added that a total of 3,000, 41 per cent, of its suppliers have a Wakefield postcode and nearly 70 per cent of the Council’s suppliers are in the Yorkshire & Humber region.

And this amount could increase further with a new legislation currently being looked at which will require local authorities to deliver social value for its district where possible through procurement.

A spokesman said that the planned legislation “is something the Council welcomes”.

Councillor Graham Stokes, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for Corporate Performance, said: “We have been recognised nationally for our forward thinking approach to procurement and how we use spending power for local benefit.

“The revised procurement strategy and processes will strengthen further the Council’s focus on how its procurement activity can benefit the district.”
