Council questions police overhaul

A PLANNED reorganisation of Humberside Police has come in for renewed criticism from senior East Riding councillors who claim the district’s residents will receive a poorer service while paying more.

A council review of the overhaul raised concerns that police could take longer to respond to incidents and questioned the speed of the reforms.

Backing the review’s findings, Coun Jackie Cracknell, portfolio holder for community involvement and performance, said : “I have serious concerns about the management of policing in this area; for example, the police precept this year increased by 1.99 per cent, an extra burden on East Riding residents. I fear that they will not see any benefits from this extra charge.

“I am also concerned that the Police and Crime Commissioner’s accounts show a gross underspend of £6.1m, which suggests that he may have the finances required to better plan some of the unfortunate outcomes predicted in the report.”

Council leader Stephen Parnaby added: “They tell us that the fear of crime and feeling safe are very important to them. I hope that true consultation will begin now.”

Police and crime commissioner Matthew Grove has repeatedly defended the proposals which, he says, will make sure more police officers are in the areas they are needed and at the times when demand is greatest.

He has specifically denied suggestions the new structure will mean fewer officers will be on duty in areas such as Bridlington and Goole.
