Two brothers jailed after shotgun fired at building on busy Yorkshire street

Two brothers have been jailed after a shotgun was fired at a building in Barnsley, damaging a window in an attack described by police as reckless.

Daniel and Jamie Galfsky were convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

At around 9.30pm on January 21, CCTV footage captured the brothers inside a vehicle travelling towards a property on Cemetery Road in the Jump area of Barnsley.

A shotgun was then used to damage a window at the premises.

The vehicle, which was registered to Jamie Galfsky, was discovered burnt out near Wombwell Woods two days later.

Detectives from South Yorkshire Police's Armed Crime Team launched an investigation and began searching for the brothers, issuing a public appeal for information about their whereabouts.

The search for Daniel Galfsky came to an end after police received information that he was at a pub.

Officers attended the location and arrested him.

Following news of his brother's arrest, Jamie Galfsky handed himself in to police shortly afterwards.

Both brothers were subsequently charged with possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence, while Daniel was also charged with criminal damage.

They pleaded not guilty to the firearms offence at Sheffield Crown Court on March 4.

However, following a trial, a jury found both men guilty.

The brothers returned to Sheffield Crown Court on Friday (Oct 16), where they were sentenced.

Jamie Galfsky, 37, of Silkstone View, Barnsley, was jailed for six years and six months for possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

Daniel Galfsky, 35, also of Silkstone View, Barnsley, received a six-year prison sentence for possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and criminal damage.

Acting Detective Inspector Matt Barnes, from South Yorkshire Police's Armed Crime Team, said: "Daniel and Jamie Galfsky decided to carry out a reckless act of using a firearm on a busy street, with no regard for their action or the potential consequences.

"This could have been a very different trial if someone got injured on that night, but thankfully the building took the damage.

"Those who choose to use guns on the streets of South Yorkshire are senseless and violent individuals. They do not belong here, or anywhere.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their support during our investigation. We had a fantastic response from the wanted appeal we issued, as well as witnesses providing statements. Your help really strengthens our cases and helps bring justice."
