Dashcam footage shows appalling driver of motorists who overtakes on M62 by driving onto the wrong side of the motorway

A motorist caught on camera driving onto the wrong side of the motorway to overtake another vehicle has been shamed for their appalling driving.

The 4x4 driver drove over the central reservation of the M62 eastbound near to junction 25 at Brighouse in West Yorkshire in a bid to overtake slowing traffic in the third lane.

The moment which was caught on dash cam shows the vehicle driving into the path of oncoming traffic - nearly crashing into another car - on the westbound carriage, before veering back onto the correct side of the road.

West Yorkshire Police released the footage on the force's Twitter account alongside other examples of dangerous driving caught on camera.

One car can be seen dangerously overtaking another and narrowly avoiding a head on crash with an oncoming vehicle in one clip, while another piece of footage shows a taxi going through a red light at a junction.

The force released footage of the incidents, highlighting its Operation Snap initiative encouraging witnesses who have caught incidents of dangerous driving on camera to send in their videos for investigation.

It said "nearly 60 per cent" of the 1,200 incidents sent in since the Operation started have resulted in further action from the police, including a fine, points or a prosecution.

The first conviction from the Operation came in October last year when a man from Bradford was banned from the roads for two years, ordered to pay £119 in costs and carry out 200 hours of community service for his dangerous driving which was caught on another motorist's dash cam.

Paul Jeffrey Prosecutions and Casualty Prevention Manager for West Yorkshire Police said: "This new initiative has really helped us to work with the public as part of our commitment to preventing deaths and injury and improving driver behaviour. This is all about by proactively addressing offending and unsafe driver behaviour on our roads to make the roads of West Yorkshire safer for everyone.

"I would like to encourage people to get Dashcams fitted and if they witness any dangerous driving on our roads to submit them via the portal.

"You are our additional pairs of eyes which help us to keep our roads safer and we are able to take action against driving offences we otherwise wouldn’t see."
