Home Office staff swooped on Summer Nails, in Otley Road this morning to investigate claims it was employing illegal workers.

They arrested two men from Vietnam – an 18-year-old who had entered the UK without permission and a 20-year-old who had breached his visa conditions.

The business is now facing a fine of up to £40,000 unless it can prove it carried out proper employment checks.

Deputy director Anita Bailey, of the Home Office immigration enforcement team, said: “These arrests are a clear warning to those in Leeds abusing our immigration laws. There will be no slow-down in our efforts to arrest, detain and remove you from the UK.

“Employers who use illegal labour are defrauding the taxpayer, undercutting genuine employers and denying legitimate job hunters work.

“We are happy to work with employers who want to play by the rules but those who continue to flout them will face heavy financial penalties.

“I would urge anyone with detailed and specific information about suspected immigration abuse to get in touch.”
