Man accused of the murder and rape of Hull student Libby Squire to stand trial today

The trial of a man accused of the murder and rape of Hull student Libby Squire is due to start today.

Pawel Relowicz, 26, formerly of Raglan Street, Hull, is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court this morning.

He is accused of raping and murdering Libby, who was a student at the University of Hull.

Libby, 21, had been on a night out with friends in Hull, but was turned away by door staff at the Welly nightclub on January 31, 2019.

She was last seen at the junction of Beverley Road and Haworth Street, in the early hours the following day.

Her body was discovered in the River Humber six weeks later,

Relowicz was charged with rape and murder in October 2019.

He was due to stand trial in June last year, but it was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The trial is expected to last four weeks and will be heard by Judge Jeremy Richardson QC.
