Man arrested in Skipton on suspicion of terrorism offences as heavy police presence remains

A man has been arrested on suspicion of terrorism related offences as a heavy police presence remains at a house in Skipton.

Concerned residents in Bowling Terrace reported a large number of officers in the area with a police cordon in place since last Wednesday (January 20).

Witnesses also reported a forensic tent outside a house and officers seen in the garden of a property.

Counter Terrorism Police confirmed a 62-year-old from Skipton was arrested by North Yorkshire Police on January 20, under the Sexual Offences Act and Explosives Act.

Police also confirmed a number "potentially suspicious" items were later recovered from two properties in North Yorkshire and the man was arrested again on Friday, January 22, under the Terrorism Act.

A Counter Terrorism Police spokeswoman confirmed: "On Wednesday, January 20, officers from North Yorkshire Police arrested a 62-year-old man from Skipton for offences under the Sexual Offences Act and Explosives Act.

"Following the discovery of potentially suspicious items at two properties in North Yorkshire, the man was further arrested on Friday, January 22 for offences under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act, by Counter Terrorism Policing North East.

"He remains in custody at this time and searches of two residential properties are ongoing."
