Man charged over street stab death

A 28-year-old man was due to appear before magistrates today charged with the murder of a 24-year-old man in East Leeds.

Bakhtiyar Muhsin Omar was charged with murder yesterday and is detained to appear in court this morning.

Det Supt Mark Ridley who is leading the investigation said: “Following a post mortem examination carried out on Saturday January 11, it has now been confirmed that the victim, a 24-year-old man from Leeds, died as a result of stab wounds.”

The stabbing took place during the early hours on Saturday.

Following enquiries, a 28-year-old man from the Leeds area was located in the Paddock area of Huddersfield and arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Superintendent Ridley again appealed for witnesses or anyone who was in the Lincoln Green Road area of Leeds at around 2.05am on Saturday to come forward with any information.

Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 101.

A large area of Lincoln Green was cordoned off for much of Saturday while investigations were carried out.

Burmantofts and Richmond Hill councillor Asghar Khan said: “Lincoln Green is one of the most deprived areas of Leeds and it does have some difficulties, but we’re working with the police and other partners to improve the area.”
