A man conned his way into an elderly woman's home by pretending to work for the water board before stealing £1,000 from her handbag.

The burglar attended the woman's home in Silver Jubilee Close in Wheatley, Doncaster, stating he needed to undertake checks inside the property.

The woman let the man in, but became suspicious after he asked her to run the kitchen taps. She went into her living room where the man was and he fled the scene.

The woman checked her handbag and discovered £1,000 was missing.

South Yorkshire Police have released CCTV footage of a man they want to talk to in connection with the distraction burglary, which happened on February 26, at around 12 noon.

The man is described as white, aged in his 30’s, around 5ft 8ins tall with dark short hair. He was seen wearing a dark coloured jogging top and jogging bottoms. He spoke with a Yorkshire accent and had a distinctive walk.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Officers are now keen to identify the man in the CCTV footage as they believe he can help with their enquiries.

"Do you recognise the man? Do you have any information that can help officers?

"Please call 101 quoting incident number 329 of 26 February 2021."
