Hellings, 32, also pleaded guilty to possessing a firearm without a firearms certificate in the short hearing at Teesside Crown Court this morning.

The court heard Hellings, of Coronation Road, Loftus, had accepted responsibility for Mr Kay's death "from a very early stage".

Following Mr Kay's killing, a family statement said: “We are currently working on coming to terms with the fact that a member of our family has been taken away from us."

Hellings was remanded back into custody and is due to be sentenced on November 27.
