Officer killed after police motorbike crashes with car in Yorkshire

A police officer has died in a motorbike crash while responding to an incident in Sheffield.

The 40-year-old officer, riding a marked police motorcycle, was responding to reports of a silver BMW failing to stop for officers at 1pm today (Tuesday).

The motorbike crashed with a blue Toyota Avensis on Nether Lane in the Ecclesfield area.

The police officer was sadly pronounced dead a short time after the collision.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed the driver of the Toyota, a 59-year-old man, was taken to hospital with minor injuries where he remains at this time.

Specialist officers are supporting the officer's family and the driver of the Avensis.

A police spokesperson said: "We are appealing for any witnesses to the collision, or anyone who has information about what happened to contact us.

"You should call 101 quoting incident number 374 of April 21.

"If you have any dashcam or CCTV footage that might assist us, you can send this to [email protected] quoting the incident number in the subject line."

The road remains closed on Tuesday evening and drivers are asked to avoid the area as enquiries continue.

Home Secretary Priti Patel tweeted: "The saddest news. Deeply tragic & my thoughts are with the family of this distinguished officer."
