Police carry out gunfire and mock explosions training in West Yorkshire

Residents of West Yorkshire heard gunfire and explosions near Leeds yesterday.

Police told the public to 'not be alarmed' if they heard explosions, gunfire and armed police in West Yorkshire today.

Officers in Wakefield took part in essential firearms and tactical vehicle training on Thursday (Sept 17).

The operation was near Carr Gate garden centre in Wakefield and Springmill golf course in Ossett.

The public spotted officers carrying firearms.

However, the police confirmed rounds were blank.

Mock explosions and gunfire were also heard.

A post by West Yorkshire Police on Facebook read: "We are carrying out essential police training this afternoon near Carr Gate garden centre, Wakefield, and Springmill golf course, Ossett.

"You may see officers carrying firearms (these will be blank) and carrying out tactical vehicle operations.

"You may also hear gunfire and mock explosions from our Carr Gate training centre.

"Please do not be alarmed.

"This is essential training only."
