Ashley Twiby, of Allenby Crescent, began his string of offending in April this year, but was stopped after burgling a house in Hickleton, Doncaster, the following month where he was confronted by the resident.

Detective Constable Neil Beresford said: “Twiby gained entry to the property in Hickleton at around 5.30pm on Monday, May 11, however he was disturbed by the resident when he returned home from work.

“We would always advise the public to call 999 in this type of situation and not to put themselves in danger, however it must be said that the victim showed tremendous courage on confronting him.”

Twiby fled the scene and left the victim with facial injuries that required hospital treatment.

Detectives began to investigate and were able to identify and link Twiby to four other burglaries in the Rotherham area, close to the Doncaster border.

The items stolen in all of the burglaries consisted of jewellery, cash and electrical items.

Twiby pleaded guilty to all five burglaries and was sentenced on Thursday, November 5, at Sheffield Crown Court to four years and six months in prison.

DC Beresford continued: “The victim read out his victim personal statement in court, which quite clearly had an impact on Twiby as he personally apologised to him for his actions that day.

“The victim has greatly assisted with all aspects of this investigation and his help has most definitely played a vital part in Twiby being charged, and now being locked up for a lengthy period of time.”
