A police officer is to appear in court facing serious charges relating to injuries sustained by a teenage boy at a South Yorkshire football match.

Police Constable William Sampson, of South Yorkshire Police, faces a charge of unlawful and malicious wounding following an incident in Barnsley town centre following a home football match in February.

Sampson, 26, will appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court on 2 December.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) completed its investigation in August and referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which made the decision to charge Pc Sampson.

South Yorkshire Police said it would not be making a comment while court proceedings remained active.
