South Yorkshire Police officer in court charged with wounding boy after Barnsley football match

A police officer accused of beating a 16-year-old boy following a football match in Barnsley is to have his case dealt with by the crown court.

Pc William Sampson is charged with unlawful and malicious wounding over the incident on Midland Street in Barnsley town centre in February.

The incident followed the Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday match.

Police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) completed its investigation into the incident in August and referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which made the decision to charge a police officer.

Pc Sampson, 26, appeared at Leeds Magistrates' Court earlier today (Wednesday) in a short hearing which was sent straight to the Crown.

The defendant was released on unconditional bail and is scheduled to appear before Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, December 30 at 9.30am.
