Gary David Smith and Lee William Newell are both accused of killing Subhan Anwar, who was found dead in February by staff at HMP Long Lartin in Worcestershire.

A post-mortem examination found the inmate, who was serving a life sentence for murdering a two-year-old girl, had suffered a broken neck.

Anwar was jailed at Bradford Crown Court in 2009 for killing his partner’s daughter, Sanam Navsarka.

Smith, 47, and Newell, 44, had been due to appear via video-link at Worcester Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing today.

But Judge Robert Juckes QC adjourned the plea hearing until July 5 after a fault with the video-link system prevented the defendants from taking part in the proceedings.

A trial in the case, which is expected to last for up to three weeks and be heard before a High Court judge, is scheduled to begin on September 9.
