Watch the moment suspected stolen car reverses into police officer in Aldi car park before fleeing the scene

Police have released footage of the moment a car deliberately reverses towards a police officer in an Aldi car park, before fleeing the scene.

The officer, from the South Yorkshire Roads Policing Team was following a grey Ford Mondeo on his motorbike as it made its way along High Street, Goldthorpe in Barnsley.

Checks revealed the car had no insurance, so the officer followed the vehicle onto Barnsley Road, waiting for a safe opportunity to request the driver to stop.

The Mondeo entered the Aldi car park on Barnsley Road and continued to drive around, before the officer illuminated his blue lights and requested the driver to stop.

The Mondeo car can be seen reversing into the path of the South Yorkshire Police officer.

Operation Support Superintendent Paul McMurry said: "He failed to do so and continued to drive away.

"Moments later, the driver used his car to reverse towards the officer, who luckily was able to manoeuvre his bike between the safety bollards outside the store, avoiding injury.

“The Mondeo then drove away towards Hollygrove roundabout and fled the scene.

“Checks into the vehicle have since identified that the vehicle is cloned and could be stolen.

“This type of behaviour is not acceptable, our officers come to work to serve their communities, not to be driven at and injured.
