PC Stuart Hodson was on duty and driving a marked police van in Castleford on June 15, 2019, when a BMW came to his attention because of the way it was being driven.

The police officer activated his blue lights and the BMW initially stopped, however when he pulled the police van in front of the car, it made off.

Other officers in the police van broadcast a radio message that the BMW had failed to stop.

The BMW then crashed into a roundabout as it tried to make its escape, and the man who was driving the car got out and began to run away.

PC Hodson saw the man fleeing and drove his van closer in order to get nearer to him and detain him on foot. It is at this point his police van collided with the man causing him injuries.

PC Hodson attended a misconduct hearing at the force's headquarters for allegedly breaching the Standards of Professional Standards in relation to Use of Force, Orders and Instructions, Duties and Responsibilities and Discreditable Conduct.

A force spokesman said: "It is alleged that PC Hodson conducted an unauthorised pursuit of the vehicle, knowing that the vehicle he was driving was not a pursuit vehicle, used force to detain the male driver that was not necessary and proportionate in all the circumstances and failed to act diligently in the exercise of his duties and responsibilities.

"The charge in relation to use of force was not proceeded with, the remaining charges were proved as misconduct and the officer received a written warning."
