A Freedom of Information request to West Yorkshire Police asking about the highest speed recorded in the county last year revealed that one vehicle was recorded driving at an alarming 157mph.

The speed was clocked on the M62 in September last year, in the form of a BMW 440I M Sport Auto convertible being driven by a member of the public.

At that speed, a vehicle could cover more than two-and-a-half miles in just one minute, and would almost certainly kill any occupants were it to collide with another vehicle.

Unfortunately, due to the speed, the driver of the vehicle themselves was never traced and therefore escaped prosecution.

However, the force revealed that a company was prosecuted for failing to provide driver details and was fined £1,000.

It comes as a 41-year-old father was jailed four four-and-a-half years this week for a crash on the same motorway which killed his three-year-old son and seriously injured his wife and daughter.

Israr Muhammed, from Batley, was racing with another driver, Adam Molloy, on the M62 in East Yorkshire while his family were in the car in July 2018.

Muhammed lost control of his 16-year-old Honda Civic after racing at speeds "in excess" of 100mph when he began racing with Molloy while his wife and three children were in the car.

The horrific crash resulted in the death of Say Han Ali, aged three, whose car seat - the court heard - had not been secured properly.

Molloy, from Pontefract, was also jailed for four-and-a-half years after he was convicted at trial at Hull Crown Court.

The pair were also each banned from driving for six years and three months.
