Cut-down hotel tower ‘still too high’

Developers want to lower the height of a huge tower on a landmark hotel in Hull – but residents on a nearby estate say it is still too high.

The four-star hotel and conference centre overlooking the River Hull was approved by planners last summer, despite claims the 22-storey tower would be a “blot on the landscape”.

Next month developer Trinity Quay LLP will ask councillors for the tower to be lowered by four storeys, from 284ft to 219ft.

The plans for the 232-room hotel include an 800-seat conference centre with a brightly-lit upper floor – but residents in Victoria Dock have complained that it will be lit up like a “giant beacon”, shining into their homes by day and night.

One resident said: “It is still too high for the area and much bigger than any other building, for example it is five times higher than the existing Premier Inn.”

Those living in the Trinity Wharf block next door are unhappy about being plunged it the shade, while developers of another scheme across the river says the “dumbed down” version puts it in competition with other hotel plans. Planners say the changed design is “acceptable”.
