Dancers celebrate city centre home

Shoppers were treated to ballet on city streets yesterday by, from left, Nicola Gervasi, Lori Gilchrist, Martin Bell and Jeremy Cornier, ahead of a performance in Leeds.

As Northern Ballet's new home in the centre of Leeds nears completion, dancers from the North of England's premier company will host Ballet on Briggate in its home city for the second successive year.

The dancers were yesterday in the city centre ahead of the event which will take place on Briggate, outside Debenhams, on Saturday from noon until 2pm.

Northern Ballet's dancers will perform pieces from The Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

There will also be performances from the Phoenix Dance Theatre Academy, students from the Northern Ballet Academy and community groups.

Northern Ballet artistic director David Nixon said: "We are proud to be based in Leeds. This is a really exciting time for the company, our new building is almost ready to move into and we want to share our excitement with our local community.

"We would like to invite everyone, from ballet

lovers to those who have never experienced ballet before, to join us."
