Doubts over firm’s expansion plans

COUNCILLORS have clashed over an electronics company’s expansion plans which involve alterations to a Grade II listed mill.

Hebden Bridge firm Calrec Audio Limited wants permission from Calderdale Council for an extension to the rear of Nutclough Mill in Victoria Road but there is opposition to the scheme.

Calrec, which employs 146 people, needs more space for manufacturing and says the extension will allow it to take on another 24 staff.

Local councillor Nader Fekri says the proposed extension is too big and not appropriate for a conservation area.

But Councillor Janet Battye has backed the scheme, along with nine letter writers.

A council report concludes that the scheme should be granted planning permission because it would bring economic and employment benefits to Hebden Bridge and there is a “strong chance” the company may move out if the proposal is rejected.

The council believes it will be difficult to find a new tenant for the mill if Calrec moves on - and officers fear the company may relocate outside the area.

Councillors will discuss the plans on January 8.
