Elephants answer trunk call

A herd of 'baby elephants' hand-painted by artists and designers including Tommy Hilfiger and Matthew Williamson has set London's Trafalgar Square ablaze with colour.

The life-sized artworks come from a collection of 260 models appearing around the city this summer for the Elephant Parade 2010.

Julien Macdonald, Alice Temperley, Diane von Furstenberg, Lulu Guinness, Marc Quinn and John Rocha are also among those supporting the initiative to raise awareness of the plight of Asian elephants.

Williamson's – a glittery rainbow of colours – and Hilfiger's red beast, sporting a mohican of foliage across its head, were among those on show yesterday.

The London event follows a similar display in Amsterdam last year.
