Battlecries ring out as troops stage mock assault

Fresh from a training exercise on the Kenyan Savannah, the troops carried out mock assaults on an enemy position in front of a raptured crowd.

The techniques on display were exactly the same as those used during their training exercises in Africa, often in arduous field conditions.

Company Second in Command, Captain Chris Beaumont said: “It is good to be able to demonstrate to people that we train at when we are in these far-flung places.

“In Kenya there were giraffes, zebras and all sorts of wildlife looking on – here in Harrogate there’s still lots of animals, but slightly less exotic, albeit prize-winning ones.”

Burma Company deployed on exercise in early January 2014 for a six-week deployment to the British Army Training Unit Kenya in support of another Battlegroup.

During their time there they were able to train in platoon and company level tactics in the austere conditions of the Kenyan bush, with plenty of African wildlife to content with.

The Officer Commanding, Major Tim Exton, said in advance of the operations: “This will be an impressive show of infantry tactics and Yorkshire soldiering spirit.

“For the more faint hearted there is a Yorkshire Regiment stand, showcasing some of our vehicles, and an inflatable assault course and paintball range for the younger element.”

The display capped off a proud week for the army at the show, 
after Yorkshire Agricultural Society Cup for best solider was presented to Private Matthew Gilmartin, who was selected as the best Private solider in the Battalion and whose performance has marked him out as a star of the future.

Having recently been deployed to Afghanistan he was presented with his award in front of hundreds in the Main Ring, his mother amongst them.
