Thousands of tonnes of waste will be processed into “refuse derived fuel” at the new Energy Works plant still under construction on Cleveland Street, in Hull.

The fuel will then be refined and passed through the gasification plant creating energy and heat for export to the National Grid.

The new contract, which starts next April, came after Green North East Trading Bidco Limited, the company previously handling the city’s residual household waste, went into administration.

Since last October emergency disposal services have been provided predominantly by Melton-based Transwaste Ltd.

Geminor UK Ltd submitted the lowest price and also scored the highest combination of points overall in the tender process, according to council documents.
