Creamery puts up milk rate for farmers

The company which makes Wensleydale Cheese has increased the rate it pays its farmers, handing Yorkshire Dales producers a much-needed boost during challenging times for the dairy sector.

The Wensleydale Creamery is to increase its milk rate by 1.5p per litre, bringing it to 28.5 ppl from October 1.

It follows a high-profile campaign by farming groups to highlight the low prices paid to dairy farmers, many of whom were receiving a rate below the cost of production.

David Hartley, managing director of The Wensleydale Creamery, said: “We felt it was vital to take this stand and support our farmers in leading the cheese market debate on how best to support sustainable milk production in the UK.”
