Flood fears for Humber and East Coast as strong winds and peak tides combine

Flood alerts are in place for much of the Yorkshire coast

A number of other flood alerts - meaning flooding is possible - are in place for the East Coast.

Spurn National Nature Reserve near Kilnsea will close to all visitiors from noon today (Thursday) until further notice due to the weather.

And temporary steel flood defences are being put in place by the Environment Agency on part of the North Lincolnshire coast.

The warning for the North Bank means flooding is expected and people in the affected area should take immediate action.

It was put in place yesterday and is likely to remain in effect until the weekend.

The agency said: "High tides are expected for the remainder of the week, increasing towards peak spring tides and strong winds on Friday. We will continue to monitor the situation."

Meanwhile, part of the A1077 Sluice Road between South Ferriby and Winterton will be closed from 9am today (Thursday).

A North Lincolnshire Council statement said: "This is to allow the Environment Agency to put in place temporary steel flood defences as a precautionary measure. The road is likely to remain closed until Sunday.

"The EA is issuing flood alerts and warnings due to the expected bad weather on Friday when gale or severe gale force northerly winds are expected to generate large waves along the east coast, which could result in coastal flooding across Lincolnshire.

"A signed diversion route will be in place. Access will be maintained for local residents, businesses and emergency services."

Flood alerts - meaning flooding could be possible - remain in place for the the Humber Estuary from Hessle Haven to Faxfleet, Humber Estuary from Spurn Point to Winestead Outfall and the North Sea Coast at Bridlington, Hornsea, Withernsea, Easington and Kilnsea.

An alert is also in place for the North Sea Coast between Staithes and Whitby, including the tidal River Esk.

The warnings were first issued yesterday amid concerns about the afternoon high tide.

Areas of particular concern include Bridlington South Pier, East Clough and Hessle near the Country Park Inn, Kilnsea Village and Sandsend.
