Flower champs in challenge to global market

UK flower champions Gill and Peggy Hodgson were given a free space at the show, from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, to promote a network of independent growers to compete in the global market.

They came up with the idea for the network to provide traditional flowers such as sweet peas, godetias, cornflowers and clarysage after growers were squeezed out of shops by the internationalisation of the supply business.

The farmer’s wife and daughter from Everingham, near Pocklington, got calls from across the country, including Covent Garden, after the Yorkshire Post reported on their venture.

“But they were mostly wanting to buy the flowers and we still need growers,” said Mrs Hodgson.

She was originally looking for farmers wanting to diversify, but is now encouraging allotment holders and gardeners to come forward.
